Women's Volleyball sweeps Boyce and Principia to conclude Indiana trip

ST. MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. -- The Midway women's volleyball team wrapped up a busy first week of the season on Saturday (Sept. 2) when they battled Boyce (Ky.) and Principia (Ill.) on day two of the 'Showdown in the Woods' hosted by St. Mary-of-the-Woods (Ind.).

Midway – who split their two matches on Friday – bounced back on Saturday and came away with a pair of sweeps. They first handed Boyce a 3-0 defeat (25-14, 25-13, 25-15) before finishing the weekend with a 3-0 victory (25-10, 25-14, 25-7) against Principia.

Following the weekend road swing, the Eagles improve to 4-1 on the year.

Midway 3, Boyce 0

The Eagles came out firing on all cylinders in the opener as they posted a .338 hitting clip while holding the Bulldogs to a .012 clip. They carded 35 kills and committed just 10 miscues in their 74 swings.

Fourteen of those 35 kills came from the right arm of Aubry Koester. The junior from Apple Valley, Calif. recorded a .480 hitting mark and picked up seven digs from the back row. Anju Sugiya (Tokyo, Japan) chipped in with nine kills and five digs in the win.

Valerie Ramos (San Juan, Puerto Rico) ran the office and dished out 20 assists while serving a team-high four service aces. Meanwhile, Kylie Kohrs (Fort Thomas, Ky.) led the defensive effort with a team-high 16 digs.

Midway 3, Principia 0

Much like the opener, the Midway offense was clicking on all cylinders in the nightcap. This time around, the Blue and Gold compiled 32 kills and a .371 attacking percentage, while holding the Panthers to a -.219 hitting mark.

The Eagles also served 11 service aces led by the duo of Emma Krutsinger (Corbin, Ky.) and Kylie Kohrs, who each carded three apiece. The duo also chipped in on the defensive end with six and seven digs apiece.

Aubry Koester led the offensive effort with nine kills and a .412 hitting mark, while Hannah Brink (Greenville, Mich.) recorded eight kills in 17 swings for a .583 attaching clip.

Katherine Rodriguez Ortiz (Fajardo, Puerto Rico) and Valerie Ramos split time running the offense, and each dished out eight assists. Anju Sugiya, meanwhile, tallied a match-high 11 digs in a winning effort.
