Box Score RIO GRANDE, Ohio - After answering one Julia Doller goal, the Midway offense couldn't come up with a response to a second, as the Eagles lost for the first time this season, 2-1 in a River States women's soccer matchup with Rio Grande Thursday night.
Immediately after Döller gave Rio a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute, Midway's Maggie Sauer tied the game up on the ensuing shot, Midway's first of the game. It was the first goal of the season for Sauer, the Eagles' top scorer a season ago.
But Doller scored again in the 60th minute, booting in a rebound after Eagle goalie Yasmeen Shalash denied Amora Albano. Midway fought to the end with Sauer even getting off a shot just before the final buzzer, only for it to sail high.
The Eagles were out shot 18-10 and had just three shots on goal to the RedStorm's nine. They also committed 11 fouls to Rio Grande's five and had four cards (one red) compared to one by the RedStorm.
The Eagles, who had allowed just one goal for the season going into Thursday, fall to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the RSC. Having entered the game with three straight ties, the RedStorm improve to 1-4-3 overall, 1-0-2 in conference play.
Midway a quick turnaround, returning home for another conference game against St. Mary of the Woods (Ind.) at 1 p.m. Saturday.
