Eagles can't rally past Grenadiers in women's basketball matchup

Box Score

MIDWAY, Ky. - Nearly every time Midway appeared to be on the cusp of making a comeback, Indiana Southeast had an answer, and the Grenadiers made enough plays on the offensive end to grab a 70-62 win in a River States Conference women's basketball matchup Saturday.

The Eagles scored first on a Kassidy Daugherty 3-pointer, but that would be their only lead of the day, as that shot was proceeded by a scoring drought of over seven minutes.

The offensive effort gradually improved, and a Sereniti Webb layup three minutes into the third quarter cut what had been a 10-point deficit all the way down to 35-33. But in what would be a preview of things to come, IUS responded with a 14-6 run to go back up by double figures.

The Eagles continued to pick away and when Webb, who had her fifth double-double in eight games with a 21-point, 12-rebound performance, converted an old-fashioned 3-point play, it was once again a two-point game, 56-54.

That was the first of five possessions the Grenadiers had with a one-possession lead in the fourth quarter. They scored on four of them to ensure Midway wouldn't get over the hump.

The one such possession that didn't produce points gave Midway a chance to take the lead. Down 63-61, Jaiden Douthit got a good look at a 3-pointer but it missed long.

The Eagles had another shot to tie after IUS split two free throws at the other end, but Alyssa Hitch was also unable to connect from long distance with under a minute to play. Midway wouldn't make another field goal as IUS closed the game out at the foul line.

Douthit added 11 points and seven rebounds for Midway, which is now 7-12 overall, 3-5 in league play.

The Eagles have a good chance to bounce back Tuesday when they travel to face West Virginia Tech (4-13, 1-6) at 5:30 p.m.
