TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Attempting to lock down a spot in the River States Conference Tournament, the Midway men's soccer team opened a favorable part of its schedule with a big win Saturday.
Ben Banton scored an unassisted goal in the first half and goalie Connor Vincent pitched his third shutout of the season, as the Eagles earned a 1-0 road win at Saint Mary of the Woods.
The Eagles got the only offense they needed in the 34th minute, when Banton scored his second goal of the season, his other coming in the season-opener against Berea.
As was the case in the Berea game, the Eagle defense pitched a shutout, with reigning River States Conference Defensive Player of the Week Vincent recording six saves.
The Pomeroys didn't make things easy on Midway, even getting what looked to be an open look off of a corner kick- pass in the final minute, only for the Eagle defense to turn them away and head home with a conference win.
Hoping to get one of the six spots into the RSC Tournament, the Eagles, who came into Saturday in sixth place in the league standings, are now 2-3-1 in conference play while dropping the Pomeroys to 1-3.
Midway has two league games remaining, but will first host Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) in a non-conference game Tuesday, the team's final home game of the 2024 season.
