MIDWAY, Ky. - Jared Bastin scored his first goal of the season at a perfect time and his defense made it stand, as the Midway men's soccer team earned a thrilling 1-0 win over NCAA Division-II Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) Wednesday afternoon.
Despite being out shot 22-8, the Eagle offense came together when it mattered most. They nearly took the lead with 10:15 to play, as Anwar Perry fired a rocket off a deflection, only for it to be denied on a great save by Trojan goalie John Jeffus.
But just 3 minutes, 5 seconds later, Bastin took a pass from Andy Alfaro and fired a shot from about 15 yards out on the left side of the net, which got over Jeffus' outstretched arm.
Trevecca Nazarene didn't go away quietly though, and even came dangerously close to tying the game when Jack Franklin got a clean, dead-center look with 10 seconds to play.
But as he did all night, Midway keeper Connor Vincent was in perfect position, dropping to his knees to make his 11th save of the night. He was then able to hold onto the ball as time expired.
Already the River States Conference leader in saves, Vincent is in arguably his best stretch as a college keeper. Over his last two games, both wins, he has 20 saves with just one goal allowed.
Wednesday marked Midway's first-ever win against a Division-II opponent. It's only previous game against a D-II foe was a 7-1 loss to Kentucky Wesleyan in 2022.
Winners of two straight, the Eagles will try to improve upon their 1-2 record in conference play on Saturday, when they host in-state opponent Brescia at 2:30 p.m.
