MIDWAY, Ky. - Wins by Abe Hafez and Sebastian Hutchinson highlighted a tough opening day for the Midway wrestling team, which fell 35-9 at home against Rochester Christian (Mich.) in the first match of the season Friday.
Hafez won the most thrilling match of the day at 165 pounds. He jumped out to a 4-0 over David VanDaele with a three-point take down in the second period. He held the lead until there was 30 seconds remaining, when VanDaele had a three-pointer of his own to go ahead 5-4.
But given a chance to start in the down position after a stoppage, Hafez made an escape with just six seconds left, earning the needed two points to secure a 6-5 win.
Hutchinson won in far less dramatic fashion in the following match at 174, pinning Jalien Tatum just over halfway through the first period.
The Eagles will have a quick turnaround tomorrow, traveling to Williamsburg, Ky. for the Cumberland Patriot Open. Competition will begin at 9 a.m.
