GEORGETOWN, Ky. - Facing the No. 5 team in the country on its home court, Midway looked formidable early, but Georgetown pulled away late in the first half, eventually earning a 99-77 win in the opening game of the Central Bank Jim Reid Classic Thursday.
The Eagles got to the midway point of the first half with the lead, as a
Travontae Swift 3-pointer put them ahead 20-19. That was one of three 3-pointers on the night for Swift, who led Midway with 16 points.
But a Tiger team that entered the night in the top-25 nationally in scoring responded with a 19-2 run. After taking its last lead, Midway proceeded to miss its next 13 field goal attempts.
Georgetown pulled away further in the second half, thanks largely to its dominance inside, where the Tigers held a 50-30 advantage in points in the paint.
Three other Eagles finished the night in double figures.
Amari Wales scored 14 points, while
Miguel Shaw and
Decoreio Smith both added 11.
Shaw also had a team-high seven rebounds for the Eagles, who are now 1-2 on the season.
Midway will be back in Georgetown Friday, taking on Bethel (Tenn.) on the second day of the Jim Reed Classic. The game will tip at 6 p.m.
