Eagles snap three-game skid, top Cumberland in men's basketball

MIDWAY, Ky. - Playing the last of a three-game-in-three-day stretch, the Midway men's basketball team had five players score in double figures and snapped a three-game losing streak with an 89-78 win over Cumberland (Tenn.) at home Saturday afternoon.

The Eagles trailed for just 29 seconds and saw their lead balloon as high as 16 points in the second half. The Phoenix were able to get within six, 74-68, on a Demarius Boyd 3-pointer with 6:29 to play.

But the Eagles, who let a double-digit lead slip away against Bethel (Tenn.) on Friday, immediately responded with six straight points off a timeout, a run kick-started by back-to-back Nick Keeton layups.

After scoring 26 points the night before, Decoreio Smith again led Midway on Saturday, scoring 20 points and making a game-best four 3-pointers.

Travontae Swift added 15 points in 15 minutes off the bench, with Amari Wales (14), Will VanHook (11) and Robbie Henry (10) reaching double figures as well.

VanHook and Henry also had five assists each, with Henry's seven rebounds just one shy of the game-high eight pulled down by Miguel Shaw.

Defensively, Midway forced a season-high 20 turnovers, which were turned into 25 points.

The win moves the Eagles to 2-3 on the season. They are 2-0 at home.

Following the intense 72-hour period, Midway won't take the court again until it travels to Louisville for a Nov. 26 exhibition against NCAA Division-I Bellarmine.

The Eagles' next official game will be the Dec.11 conference opener against Rio Grande (Ohio), which will tip off at 5:30 p.m. in Midway.
