MIDWAY, Ky. - Georgetown, the No. 11-ranked team in the NAIA, forced Midway into a season-high 24 turnovers and pulled away after a tight first half, earning a 78-58 win over the Eagles in a women's basketball matchup at Marshall Gymnasium Wednesday night.
Midway more than held its own in a competitive first half that featured nine lead changes and five ties.
Trailing 38-34 at halftime, the Eagles looked primed to tie the game at 40 two-and-a-half minutes into the third quarter, when
Jacie Chesser appeared to have a clean look at a layup. But a good close by Tiger defender Callie Jackson forced a rushed shot that clanged off the rim.
Georgetown immediately turned the stop into points, as Anna Long made a 3-point shot just eight seconds after the Chesser miss. This kicked off a 9-0 run and the Tigers remained in control the rest of the game.
The charge was led by a quick, suffocating perimeter defense that routinely crashed Midway's passing lanes. The Tigers were particularly stingy in the third quarter, forcing nine turnovers that were turned into 10 points.
The Eagles, who had forced 82 turnovers in their first three home games, created just six on Wednesday. The loss ended a six-game win streak at Marshall Gymnasium for Midway, dating back to last season.
A'Lyrica Hughes (14)
Jermyra Christian (12),
Atlantis White (11) and
Taryn Morris (10) all scored in double-figures for the Eagles. Defensively, Midway was led by
Trinity Johnson, who had 12 rebounds and four blocked shots, both career highs.
Yet another ranked opponent awaits Midway in its River States Conference opener on Dec. 11. The Eagles will begin the league slate against No. 8 Rio Grande (Ohio) at 7:30 p.m.
