PIKEVILLE, Ky. – The Midway Wrestling team delivered two dominant performances Friday, defeating Montreat University and UPIKE with final scores of 38-13 and 42-13, respectively.
In the dual against Montreat, Midway set the tone early and often with a point-scoring frenzy. Tyrique Simms (133) and Kaleb Clark (157) secured quick pins, while Alex Velazquez (141), Chris Begley (149), Abe Hafez (165) and Aaron Garcia (heavyweight) each won by tech fall.
The dual against UPIKE saw a strong effort from Midway as well. After a close 12-10 loss at 125 (Kapela Joseph) and a forfeit at 133 (Simms), Velazquez (141) fell by major decision, putting UPIKE ahead. However, Begley (149) responded with a pin, and Jabril Williams (165) added another . Clark (157), Michael Colligan (174), Ernst Lavaud Jr. (184), and David Emfinger (197) each received forfeits, pushing the score to 36-13. Garcia (heavyweight) capped the night with a quick pin in 58 seconds, securing a 42-13 victory for Midway.
Midway's strong performances from Begley, Clark, and Garcia were pivotal in both duals. The Eagles hope to carry this momentum into next weekend, where they will head to Gatlinburg, Tenn., for the Smoky Mountain Duals on Dec. 14th.
