Eagles ride great balance, defense in women's basketball win over IUK

Box Score

MIDWAY, Ky. - Midway got great offensive balance and held off a late Indiana Kokomo rally, earning back-to-back wins for the first time this calendar year with a 72-64 victory against Indiana Kokomo in River States women's basketball play Tuesday night.

The Cougars appeared to have no answer for Sereniti Webb early, as the Eagle center recorded six rebounds in the first five minutes of play. Though she finished with a 14-point, 11-rebound double-double, Webb's night would be much more difficult the rest of the way, as IUK proceeded to send two to three defenders at her on every touch.

Luckily, the rest of the team stepped up. After being held scorless in the first half, Kassidy Daugherty put in 14 points in the second with three 3-pointers. Jaiden Douthit added eight of her 10 in the second half, and following a 9-0 run to open the fourth quarter, the Eagles had a 63-44 lead.

The Cougars made things interesting, and when Anna Kiser converted a layup with 2:06 to go, the lead was down to 65-59. But with momentum seeming to be slipping away, Jermyra Christian took it back, making a steal at half court and converting a layup on the other end to push the lead back to eight with under two minutes to play.

Fresh off a 12-point, 12-rebound, six-assist effort at Brescia Saturday, Christian stuffed the stat sheet again Tuesday with 10 points, nine assists, eight rebounds and five steals. She and teammate Trinity Johnson made life miserable for the Cougars around the permitter, each finishing with five steals.

Turnovers proved to be the biggest difference Tuesday, with the Eagles forcing 25 while only giving the ball away 12 times. Midway finished with 17 steals as a team, its most of the entire season.

The Eagles improve to 7-8 in the RSC while earning an eighth straight win over the Cougars. Still looking to lock down a spot in the conference tournament, Midway will travel to face a good St. Mary of the Woods team (11-4 in conference play) at 1 p.m. Saturday.
