MIDWAY, Ky. - A new era of Midway athletics began on Tuesday, as the Eagle men's soccer team hosted Georgetown in the first game ever played on a new turf field on the Midway campus.
Sadly, the Tigers would play the role of spoiler, shutting down the Eagle offense and pulling away late in the second half for a 4-0 win.
Coming in undefeated with an offense that ranked top-10 nationally in several categories, Georgetown needed just 4:36 to get on the board, when Alejandro Mena scored off a great pass from Mohammed Mouzoune.
The Tigers had several more good looks over the next 70-plus minutes, but Midway keeper Connor Vincent was able to prevent further damage with a string of lunging saves. Vincent finished the night with seven stops.
Unfortunately, Midway wasn't able to mount a strong counterattack, finishing with just two shots on goal.
Georgetown then put the game away by scoring twice in a 90-second span late in the second half. Esteban Betancurt Cardona made it 2-0 on an unassisted goal, before assisting on a Charlie Hogg goal. The Tigers would then score again with just 1:40 to play.
The loss drops the Eagles to 1-3. They have two more home games this week, starting with a 3:30 p.m. matchup against Kentucky Wesleyan on Saturday.
