MIDWAY, Ky. - After struggling to even get a shot off in each of its previous two games, the Midway men's soccer team rebounded with one of the best offensive performances in program history Sunday.
Eight different Midway players accounted for nine goals, as the Eagles won a high-octane, 9-4 affair against Cincinnati-Clermont, earning the first win by any Midway team on the new on-campus turf field Sunday.
Only Henry Alvor, who scored in the 27th and 54th minutes, netted two goals in the balanced attack.
Andy Alfaro got things going 3 minutes, 20 seconds into the game, with Blake Warner scoring just over five-and-a-half minutes later.
Karl Shand Jr. and Martin Escobar scored late in the first half to give the Eagles a 5-2 lead at halftime before Alvor, Sedrick Rugwiro, Sam Mylor and Florene Twahirwa accounted for four consecutive goals in a 20-minute stretch in the second half.
Alfaro, Mylor and Warner all scored their first goals in a Midway uniform Sunday.
Escobar and Alfaro also finished with assists for the Eagles, who finished the day with the second most goals ever scored by a Midway team in a single game. The only outing that saw more scoring was a 13-1 win over Carlow on Oct. 21, 2021.
Now 2-3 on the season, Midway, which had been shut out in its previous two games, returns to action Wednesday when it travels to Lexington to face Transy at 7 p.m.
