WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - Midway heavyweight
Aaron Garcia earned a win over an opponent that narrowly missed earning an All-American finish in 2024, as the Eagles ultimately fell 38-3 in a dual against in-state conference foe Cumberlands Friday.
Garcia won 4-1 against Wiley Dunn, the 24th-ranked wrestler in the weight class. Dunn lost in the blood round at the 2024 NAIA National Championships in a decision against the No. 6 seed at the tournament, Antonio Dacosta of Menlo (Calif.).
Garcia's win would be Midway's only victory on the night, but there were multiple close matches. While the score was heavily one sided, five matches were lost by decision with four of those losses by one takedown.
"Our guys competed hard today," Midway head coach
Kenny Mason said after the dual. "Cumberlands is No. 4 for good reason and we are battling in every match. We just have to continue to fine-tune things and I believe those matches start to fall in our favor."
The Eagles will have a quick turn around as they are on the road again on Monday, Jan. 20, against their next Mid-South opponent, No. 10 Campbellsville.
