RIO GRANDE, Ohio. - Midway Wrestling dropped its first dual of the new year to Rio Grande, 23-19 (Ohio) Friday. This was the Eagles' first match back from the holiday break and their first Mid-South Conference dual of the season.
The Eagles started with a 12-0 lead after Rio forfeited the first two weight classes of 125 and 133 pounds. However, the Red Storm would prove too treacherous for Midway, which would win just two of the next eight matches.
Those matches were won by
Christopher Sperin (149) and
David Emfinger (197) who won by major decision and decision respectively. Sperin defeated Zachary Lopez 10-0 with Emfinger topping Ashton Simpson 4-0.
The Eagles will look to turn things around quickly as their next completion is Saturday, at the Fairmont State Invitational in Fairmont, W. Va.
