MIDWAY, Ky. - Moments after one of her few miscues on the day,
A'Lyrica Hughes felt compelled to apologize to assistant coach
Jay Lucas.
"My bad, I should have had that," Hughes said to Lucas moments after she had a fourth-quarter layup attempt roll off the rim. This drew only laughter from Lucas, who'd just seen his guard put up her best performance yet during what's been a sparkling freshman campaign.
Hughes had a 21-point, 10-rebound double-double while also leading all players with seven assists and five steals, as Midway rolled to a 78-58 win over Indiana East in River States Conference women's basketball Saturday afternoon.
It was the first conference win in two tries for the Eagles, who improved to 7-6 overall.
Hughes set new career-high marks in scoring and assists. She also had her second double-double of the season and recorded at least five steals for the sixth time, including each of the last three games.
The Eagles were plus-14 in the turnover battle Saturday, forcing 25. It marked the ninth time they've forced at least 20 in a game this season.
Jacie Chesser had a strong game off the bench, finishing with 13 points and seven rebounds.
Jermyra Christian and
Kassidy Daugherty narrowly missed double-figures as well, each scoring nine points to lead Midway to a sixth-consecutive win over IU East.
After playing their last five at home, the Eagles will now be on the road for five straight, starting with an in-state conference battle against Alice Lloyd at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
