PIPPA PASSES, Ky. - A go-ahead basket by
Will VanHook with under 20 seconds to play was answered by a Ben Soumahoro layup at the other end, as Alice Lloyd rallied to hand Midway a heartbreaking 84-83 loss in a River States Conference men's basketball thriller Wednesday night.
After holding an 81-74 lead with 2:12 to play, visiting Midway let the advantage slip away. Their Eagle counterparts put together an 8-0 lead in just 94 seconds, going ahead 82-81 after Soumahoro made a layup while being fouled, then made a free throw with 38 seconds to go.
Midway was able to take back the lead with 19.4 seconds to play. After
Robbie Henry pulled down an offensive rebound, the last of his game-high nine boards, he found VanHook, who slashed to the basket and netted a floater over two converging Alice Lloyd defenders to make it 83-82.
Unfortunately for the visitors, Soumahoro had another answer. After his drive was cut off two Eagle defenders, he was able to get them off their feet with a pump fake, then convert an easy layup with 3.6 seconds remaining. Midway was able to go the length of the court, but a
Travontae Swift 3-point try bounced off the rim as time expired.
It was a bitter end for Midway, which had led by as much as 20 points in the first half. But after getting within 48-40 at the break, Alice Lloyd proceeded to score the first seven points of the second half before rallying again down the stretch.
The loss came despite an excellent offensive effort from
Amari Wales, who had 28 points and seven rebounds while shooting 11-of-16 from the field.
The Eagles fall to 4-7 overall with a 1-2 mark in the RSC. Wednesday was the start of a four-game, River States road swing, which will continue with a 1 p.m. matchup against Shawnee State (Ohio) Saturday.
