Midway wrestling falls 30-13 to reigning MSC champ Cumberland

MIDWAY, Ky. - Midway wrestling lost its dual against reigning Mid-South Conference champions Cumberland (Tenn.) 30-13 Wednesday, while picking up three victories throughout the night.

After losing the 125- and 133-pound matches, Midway needed a momentum shift. That's when graduate student Anthony Caruso (141) stepped on the mat. After a solid first period, he chose to go down at the start of the second.

He was able to get a quick escape that turned into a front-headlock, where he would use a knee-pick dresser dumb move to knock his opponent to his back and get the pinfall with a cradle.

The next win would come from Jabril WIlliams (165). In a match that came down to the wire, Jabril was down 8-6 with 30 seconds left in the match. He stayed patient with his offense and was able to score a takedown on the end of the mat putting him in the lead 9-8.

After a stalemate call, the official brought them back to the center where Jabril would show a dominate 20 second ride to finish the match on top.

Aaron Garcia (heavyweight) capped off the night with an electric win at heavyweight. Garcia put on a takedown clinic as he went on to tech fall his opponent Erick Willock, 18-3.

"Everything I've learned and have been able to do this year is because of...coach (Kenny) Mason," Garcia said when asked what was the key to his success in his victory. "He has been working with me in the room a lot and it is starting to come together."

There where also had a pair of overtime matches during the night. Sebastian Hutchinson came up short against Cameron Nesbitt in a double overtime, 9-5 final at 174 pounds. Kyler Adams (149) would fall to Victor Guzman, the No. 15-ranked wrestler in the class, 8-5 in a sudden victory.

The Eagles are scheduled to be back on the mat Saturday, Jan. 11 at the Missouri Baptist Invitational.
