Men's wrestling drops opener despite late rally

MIDWAY, Ky. - Midway won four of the final five matches, but wasn't able to work all the way back from a 25-0 deficit as Rochester Christian (Mich.) topped the Eagles 30-21 in a season-opening men's wrestling dual at Hunter Field House Friday.

The Warriors came out on fire, winning the 125 and 133-pound matches by pinfall in the opening minute, then getting major decisions at 141 and 149 and a tech fall at 157.

It looked like more of the same early in 165, as Jailen Tatum jumped out to a 6-3 lead over Aidan Karpinski, before Karpinski executed a huge turnaround just before the end of the second period.

In the closing seconds, he got Tatum to the mat then successfully pinned his shoulders with just one second left to get Midway six points.

The momentum remained at 174, as Michael Colligan dominated Christian Preston from the start, earning a 20-6 major decision to make it 25-10, which became 25-16 when Sebastian Hutchinson won by forfeit at 184.

The Warriors would clinch the win with a tech fall at 197 before Midway ended the day with one of its own, as Aaron Garcia crushed Sawyer Kuenzer 17-1 in the heavyweight division.

Midway is right back in action on Saturday, traveling to Corbin, Ky. to take part in the Pepsi Patriot Open, hosted by the University of the Cumberlands.
