MIDWAY, Ky. - Swarming defense and great balance continued to be a winning formula for the Midway women's basketball team, which continued its best start in over 20 years with a 97-64 blowout of visiting Union on Wednesday.
The Eagles, who are now 5-1, entered the night 12th in the country in scoring (91.2 points per-game) and seventh in forced turnovers (29.4), and continued their dominance Wednesday, turning the Bulldogs over 27 times, which produced 31 points.
In each of their six games, Midway has had double-digit players score. Against Union, 14 got in the score book, with a pair of reserves having career nights.
Leading the way was
Morgan Cross, who had a career-high 17 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the floor.
Alexis Taylor added an 11-point, 12-rebound double-double, with eight of her rebounds coming on the offensive end.
Another freshman,
Alexys Moore, continued her great start with 13 points and four 3-pointers, giving her six-consecutive double-digit scoring games.
Elsewhere,
A'Lyrica Hughes led all players with four steals, while she and
Jermyra Christian both had four assists. Christian and Moore also had three steals, as the Eagles had 15 as a team.
The 33-point win actually proved to be the most competitive game the Eagles have played at home this season. In three games at Marshall Gymnasium, they are winning by an average of 52.6 points.
Wednesday was the final official game before the Eagles begin River States Conference play, but they will be greatly challenged before the RSC opener.
Over the next week, Midway has two exhibitions, starting with a trip to face NCAA Division-I Eastern Kentucky in Richmond at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
