COLUMBIA, Ky. - Lindsey Wilson came out on fire and Midway was unable to catch up, as the Blue Raiders
avenged their only loss of the season by defeating the Eagles 89-78 in a non-conference men's basketball game Monday.
The Blue Raiders shot 18-of-28 from the floor in the first half while making 8-of-11 3-point tries, taking a 50-29 lead into halftime and stretching it to 66-41 with 12:32 to play.
Midway didn't go away quietly, however, immediately answering with a 22-6 run over the ensuing 5:47, with 10 of their points in that time coming from
Decoreio Smith.
Smith, who led all players with 23 points, helped make things more interesting down the stretch. After Lindsey Wilson had extended its lead back to 13, he hit 3s on back-to-back possessions, making it an 80-73 game with 1:44 to play.
Those were Smith's fourth and fifth made triples of the evening.
Midway would get as close as seven again, when
Preston Hoskins hit a 3-pointer to make it 85-78 within 31 seconds remaining.
But those would be the the Eagles' final points of the evening, as DJ Gordon made two free throws, then added a steal and layup all in the span of 10 seconds to put the game away.
Smith also recorded a game-best five assists. Backcourt mate
Amari Wales narrowly missed a double-double, finishing with 15 points and eight rebounds, while also tying
Bradley Robinson for the team lead with three steals.
The Eagles, who defeated 7-1 Lindsey Wilson 83-69 in overtime on Nov. 11, dropped their third-consecutive game to fall to 3-4 on the year.
Midway will be back home to open River States Conference play on Dec. 2, when it takes on Rio Grande at 6 p.m. in Marshall Gymnasium.
