MIDWAY, Ky. - Midway earned a pair of wins but No. 12, nationally ranked Cumberlands rode superior depth to a 33-8 win in each team's first Mid-South Conference dual of the season on Friday.
The Eagles took an early 5-3 lead when
Logan Brown overcame an early deficit and used a string of takedowns to earn a 24-8 tech fall over Drew Waldon with one minute remaining in the final period.
A freshman, Brown earned his first collegiate win Friday.
Down 9-5, Midway had a chance to turn the momentum in its favor at 149 pounds, as a three-point takedown with under 10 seconds remaining gave
Nolan Jones a 6-5 lead over Yaveion Freeman.
With five seconds left, Freeman got out of bounds then got in the down position when action resumed. Instead of merely getting a one-point escape, Freeman was able to get a two-point reversal just before time expired to steal a 6-5 decision.
The Eagles would earn just one more win the rest of the match, with
Sebastian Hutchinson topping Jackson Shramek 4-1 at 184. Now 5-2 on the season, Hutchinson won on the strength of a three-point takedown in the final seconds of the second period.
Now 0-2 in duals, Midway concludes the home portion of its schedule next Friday in a Mid-South matchup against Rio Grade at 6 p.m.
