RIO GRANDE, Ohio - A couple of good looks couldn't find the bottom of the net, and a great effort fell one-point short for the Midway women's basketball team against No. 13 Rio Grande on Tuesday night.
Trinity Johnson had a game-high 15 points, and got a clean look off an offensive rebound at the buzzer, but her shot rimmed off and the Eagles suffered a 67-66 loss in the River States Conference opener for both teams Tuesday.
Trailing 65-62, the Eagles got within a point on a
Jermyra Christian layup with 17 seconds to go, then put themselves in great position for the upset when
A'Lyrica Hughes made a diving steal just two seconds later.
That gave way to a wild final sequence.
Jacie Chesser appeared to have a good look at layup before being stripped by Josie Graves. Chesser was able to gather the loose ball and get off a contested shot that missed, but ended up in the arms of Johnson.
Looking like she'd be wide open at first, Johnson got a contest from 6-foot-2 Red Storm center Sophia Kline, who didn't block the shot, but kept Johnson slightly off balance, as her shot rolled around the rim but fell out as the final horn sounded.
Neither team led by double digits all night and played even in ever quarter but the second, in which Rio Grande held an 11-10 advantage.
The Eagles, who entered the night tied for sixth in the NAIA in takeaways (28.6), kept the pressure going against a quality opponent, forcing 26 turnovers, which helped offset the Red Storm's 53-38 rebounding advantage.
Four other Eagles scored in double-figures. Chesser had 12 while Hughes,
Jermyra Christian and
Jenna Sparks all had 10.
Johnson added seven rebounds and five steals while Christian dished seven assists for the 5-2 Eagles, whose last win against a ranked opponent wasÂ
a 78-66 win over No. 21 Mount Vernon Nazarane (Ohio) on Dec. 11, 2021.
Midway won't return to RSC action until Jan. 3, with its next six games coming out of the conference. This starts with a road game against Michigan-Dearborn on Dec. 10 at 5:30 p.m.
