UNIVERSITY PARK, Ill. - Midway had its lowest scoring output of the season, as the Eagle women's basketball team suffered a 66-54 loss to the host team on day one of the Governors State University Winter Classic on Monday.
The Eagles, who entered the day fifth in the NAIA in scoring at 91.3 points per-game, shot just 10-of-38 (26.3 percent) from the field in the first half as the Jaguars led by as many as 13 in the third quarter.
Midway would rally to get within six points on four separate occasions, the last coming on aÂ
Jermyra Christian layup that made it 54-48 with 6:24 to go. But unfortunately, that was proceeded by nine-consecutive misses from the field as Governors State would proceeded to close the game out at the foul line.
After having at least 10 players score in nine different games this season, the Eagles had just six players get in the points column Monday, with only three scoring more than five. They shot just 28.4 percent for the game, their second-lowest total this season.
A'Lyrica Hughes led the way with a season-high 18 points, while Christian (14) and
Alexys Moore (11) were also in double figures.
Trinity Johnson had a team-high nine rebounds while Christian added four steals for 8-4 Midway, which closes out the GSU Classic against in-state foe Pikeville at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
The game against the Bears will be the Eagles' final non-conference matchup of the regular season.
