DANVILLE, Ky. - It took a tie-breaker at the final singles spot to decide the Midway men's tennis spring opener at Centre Thursday, but the Eagles ultimately fell short by the slimmest of margins in a 4-3 final.
It came down to Midway's
Aleksey Granitsa and Centre's Anderson Gosnell to decide the outcome at No. 6 singles, with Granitsa winning the first set 6-3, Gosnell the second 6-4.
The pair then went all the way to a tie-break in the third before the Colonels earned the tight victory behind Gosnells' 7-6 win.
The stars of the day for Midway were
German Collado and
Ferran Clapes, who helped the Eagles secure the doubles point with a 6-3 win at No. 2.
Both players won in singles as well, Collado defeating Emilo Ventura Ramirez 6-0, 6-3 at No. 4 and Clapes winning 6-3, 6-2 over William Howell at No. 5.
Midway's doubles win was also helped by the No. 1 team of
Axel Sperling and
Izan Casado, who defeated Ramirez and Dylan Dethridge 6-4.
The Eagles aren't set to return to action until March 3-4, when they travel to Pulaski Tenn. for a pair of matches against Tennessee Southern and Blue Mountain (Miss.).
