WINCHESTER, Ky. - Even on what had been an 0-for-5 night at the plate,
Eli Glasscock was able to again prove he's the last Midway batter you want to see in a game-winning situation.
With the bases loaded and one out, Glasscock blasted a grand slam to left field, lifting the Midway baseball team to a stunning 12-9 win over Pikeville.
After giving up three run in the top of the second inning, the Eagles answered with three in the bottom half and eventually built up a 7-4 lead, thanks to a three-RBI performance by
Ayden Sciandra and three-hit efforts by
Shane Taylor and
Mahrlon Torres.
But the Bear offense came alive in the eighth inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Cam Revolt cleared them with a triple then came around to score when ensuing batter Noah Brooks singled, giving UPike an 8-7 lead.
Hope diminished further when Pikeville added a run in the ninth, but was restored when three of the first four Eagle batters in the bottom half drew walks.
Midway then caught a break when Bear third baseman Austin Gurney fielded a ground ball, but hesitated in an attempt to tag out
Britten Robinson, allowing all runners to reach safely and the lead to be cut to 9-8.
That set up Glasscock, who turned on a 2-1 pitch and towered it over the left field wall.
Midway is 3-8, and all three games have been won via game-winning Glasscock hits. He delivered go-ahead singles in a 3-2 season-opening win over Huntington and a 7-6 victory over St. Francis (Ill.).
Grant Hotchkiss, who reached on the fielder's choice prior to Glasscock's hit, reached base five times while Taylor scored three runs.
The Eagles will look to ride this boost into River States Conference play, which begins with a home series against West Virginia Tech on Friday and Saturday.
