MIDWAY, Ky. - Three days after winning on
a walk-off grand slam, Midway baseball's flare for the dramatic remained in tact in its River States Conference opener Friday.
In a doubleheader against West Virginia Tech, the Eagles broke an eighth-inning tie with three runs in an 11-8 win, then scored nine times with two outs in the sixth of a seven-inning game in the finale, an 11-6 win.
Though there were many standouts on the day, the biggest stars were
Grant Hotchkiss and
Barrett McGill, who both reached base nine times in 10 plate appearances. McGill went 4-for-4 in game two, including a go-ahead three-run home run in the sixth.
GAME ONE: MIDWAY 11, WVU TECH 8
Thanks largely to 16 Golden Bear walks, the Eagles had multiple runners reach scoring position in all but one inning.
But as Midway struggled to gain separation, Tech stormed back by taking advantage of gusting, out-blowing winds. Down 3-1 going into the sixth, the Bears took the lead on a three-run Noah Lukas home run.
They added another run before Midway responded with five runs in the bottom of the fifth to go ahead 8-5. The first three came on bases-loaded walks with the last two virtue of a two-out single by Hotchkiss.
The eighth would be equally wild, with Tech tying the score again on a three-run home run by Chase Herndon. Undeterred, Midway answered again, going ahead on an RBI double by
Ayden Sciandra then adding to its lead on RBI singles by
Eli Glasscock and McGill.
Dalton Soergel then worked a 1-2-3 ninth for the save, recording two strikeouts. Eagle pitchers had 16 strikeouts on the day, with nine coming by starter
Jesse Komoroski.
Previously having never struck out more than five batters in a game, Komoroski had eight in the first three innings Friday.
GAME TWO: MIDWAY 11, WVU TECH 6
Hope seemed in short supply after the Golden Bears answered a first-inning Eagle run with six in a row, four of them coming on two more home runs by Herndon.
Facing standout Tech pitcher Robert Kelley, who threw a 15-strikeout shutout against Midway last season, the Eagles cut into the lead in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by McGill, then loaded the bases with two out in the sixth.
After being victimized by the wind earlier, Midway took advantage of it when what looked to be a routine Glasscock fly ball got caught in a gust and landed in the outfield, scoring two runs to make it 6-4.
That's when McGill had the biggest moment of his monster day. On an 0-2 pitch, he blasted a three-run home run to left field to give Midway a 7-6 lead that continued to balloon from there.
Next batter Sciandra hit a solo home run to a virtually identical spot, and the Eagles would score twice more to bury the shell-shocked Bears, the eighth run of the frame coming on a
Britten Robinson double, the ninth on an error.
Sciandra finished the afternoon with four hits and has six RBIs during Midway's three-game win streak. Glasscock, the hitter of the game-winning grand slam against Pikeville Tuesday, has driven in seven in that time.
Now 5-8 overall, the Eagles look to complete an sweep of their RSC-opening series when Tech is back at Midway for a noon game Saturday.
