MIDWAY, Ky. - Midway baseball completed a three-game sweep over West Virginia Tech in a 6-4 victory Saturday, following
a double-header win yesterday to jump out to a 3-0 record in the River States Conference.
A strong offensive performance from
Ayden Sciandra and a clutch bullpen effort helped Midway fend off the Golden Bears.
Tech struck first in the top of the first inning when Brodey Boyce's RBI double brought home Chase Herndon. However, Midway wasted no time responding, as Sciandra laced a triple to right field, driving in Cole Malawy to even the score at 1-1.
Midway took control in the third inning when Sciandra continued his big day, singling to right field to bring home Carlos Canales on an unearned run, giving the Eagles a 2-1 lead. An RBI single from Grant Hotchkiss in the fourth extended the advantage to 3-1.
WVU Tech cut the deficit in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Logan Spurlock, but Midway capitalized on a throwing error by WVU Tech's pitcher, allowing Malawy to score an unearned run and make it 4-2.
The Golden Bears clawed back in the sixth, scoring twice on an RBI single from Noah Lukas to tie the game at 4-4. But Midway once again had an answer, as Canales singled in a run to regain the lead, followed by another RBI knock from Sciandra to push the advantage to 6-4.
On the mound, Dylan Burton (1-0) earned the win, delivering six innings of six-hit ball while allowing only two earned runs and striking out four. Jackson Lee shut the door with a dominant three-inning save, striking out seven without allowing a hit.
Midway's defense held firm, overcoming a single error, while WVU Tech struggled with two defensive miscues. Sciandra finished the day 3-for-4 with three RBIs, playing a pivotal role in the Eagles' offensive success.
The Eagles are back home for a doubleheader against Campbellsville on Tuesday.
