MIDWAY, Ky. - Four players scored in double figures and Midway overcame a brutal start, pulling away for a 74-66 win over Indiana Kokomo in River States Conference women's basketball play Saturday afternoon.
The Eagles salvaged the day with excellent play in the even-numbered quarters. After a Mia Catey layup gave the Cougars a 59-53 lead 26 seconds into the fourth, Midway responded with a 12-0 run and outscored them 21-7 the rest of the way.
The rally was started by two
A'Lyrica Hughes-assisted layups in 15 seconds, the first by
Maddie Nipper, the second by
Atlantis White immediately following a Hughes steal. The Eagles then took the lead for good on the next possession behind a
Jacie Chesser jump shot.
IUK would get within 65-64 on a Lexi Diorio 3-pointer, but that was immediately answered by a 3-point play by
Jermyra Christian, who made a layup through contact with just over two minutes to play.Â
Another 3-pointer, this one by Cameryn Rector, again made it a one-possession game, 69-66, with under a minute to go, but White answered with a jump shot on the next Midway possession to essentially ice the game.
Christian and Chesser both missed double-doubles by one rebound, Christian scoring a game-high 19 points, Chesser 10.Â
Christian scored 12 of her points in the second quarter and played a key role in the Eagles recovering from a dismal start that saw them fall behind 26-11 late in the first period.
After getting within two in the closing moments of the second quarter, Midway took its first lead in thrilling fashion when Hughes hit a well-defended shot directly from halfcourt just before the halftime buzzer. This closed a 24-12 second-quarter for the Eagles, putting them ahead 39-38.
The freshman standout finished with 13 points, four assists, four rebounds, four steals and two blocks. White, her senior backcourt mate, had 15 points and four steals for Midway, which is now 14-10 with an 8-4 record in conference play.
Before ending with three straight at home, the Eagles have their final road game of the regular season on Tuesday, traveling to face Indiana East at 7:30 p.m.
