Box Score RICHMOND, Ind. - Midway let an 18-point, third-quarter lead slip away, as Indiana East dominated the final 15 minutes of action in a come-from-behind 76-73 win in River States Conference women's basketball play Wednesday night.
The Eagles, who defeated the Red Wolves by 20 points
in the team's first meeting in January, appeared primed for another comfortable win 4:05 into the third period, when a
Trinity Johnson jump shot gave them a 52-34 lead.
Offense would be hard to come by, with Midway making just one field goal the rest of the quater, allowing the Red Wolves to cut into the lead by closing the period on a 16-4 run.
Midway tried to gain separation, but IU East continued to close. And after layups by Sally Mortensen and Ellysa Morris on back-to-back possessions, the Red Wolves pulled ahead 61-60, their first lead of the night.
The lead would change hands four more times, the last on a Gracie Kramer triple to put IUE ahead 68-66 with 4:23 remaining.
Down 75-73 with under 30 seconds remaining, Midway had a chance to tie or take the lead, only for its attempts to be thwarted when Taylor Farris stripped
A'Lyrica Hughes.
Following an Eagle foul, Farris made 1-of-2 at the foul, giving Midway one last chance to tie, only for
Maddie Nipper's 3-pointer in the final seconds to miss.
Outside shooting proved to be the difference Wednesday. The Red Wolves made 8-of-24 3-point attempts while the Eagles made just 1-of-17.
Midway lost despite being plus-13 in the turnover battle, taking the ball away 28 times.
Jermyra Christian had six steals, six assists and seven rebounds to go along with 16 points, her scoring total one less than team-leader Hughes.
Atlantis White and
Jacie Chesser both chipped in 13 for the Eagles, who fall to 14-11 with an 8-5 mark in the RSC.
They look to rebound with a 3 p.m. Saturday home game against Alice Lloyd. Each of Midway's final three regular season games are at home.
