MIDWAY, Ky. - Injuries and Shawnee State's physicality took its toll on Midway, and the Eagle women's basketball team lost its regular season finale 82-71 to the Bears at Marshall Gymnasium Saturday.
After trailing most of the first half, the Eagles appeared to find their rhythm in the third quarter. Down 37-36, they went on a 7-0 run in 1:16, taking a 43-37 lead on an
Alexys Moore jump shot. Moore finished the day with a team-best 17 points.
But after making adjustments during a timeout, Shawnee State went on a 13-2 run and never relinquished control of the game again.
Ahead 52-47 after three quarters, the Bears pulled away even further in the fourth, where they shot 10-of-14 from the field.
Shooting came to be more difficult for the Eagles, who made just 5-of-19 from 3-point range and 20-of-31 from the foul line.
The end result proved critical, as the teams close the season with identical 12-4 records in River States Conference play. However, thanks to a season sweep of Midway, Shawnee State secures the No. 2 seed in the RSC East Division, dropping the Eagles to No. 3.
As the No. 3 seed, the Eagles will travel to face West division No. 2 Indiana Southeast in the opening round on Wednesday. Midway
defeated IUS 82-65 at Marshall Gymnasium on Jan. 31.Â
However, since that game, the Grenadiers have won six straight and also finished the year with a 12-4 conference mark. On its home court, IU Southeast earned wins over both Shawnee State and West Division champion Brescia.
Wednesday's game tips off at 5:30 p.m.
