Eagle women drop OT heartbreaker in RSC quarterfinals

NEW ALBANY, Ind. - Just seconds away from advancing in the River States Conference Tournament, the Midway women's basketball team was unable to hold a lead and eventually fell 73-70 in overtime to Indiana Southeast in quarterfinal play Wednesday.

After over two minutes of scoreless action, the Eagles hoped to have the game-winning basket when Jermyra Christian powered through the lane and made a contested layup to give them a 60-59 lead with 1:36 to play in the fourth quarter.

Midway had a chance to seal the game at the foul line, but converted just 1 of 2 on two trips, leaving the door open for the Grenadiers, who took advantage when Linzie Wernert drove to the basket for a layup of her own with three seconds left to send the game to overtime.

The Eagles started fast in the extra period, going ahead 67-64 on an Alexis Taylor layup, only for IUS to score on its next four possessions, pushing the lead to 72-68 with 34 seconds remaining.

Midway got within 72-70 on two Taylor free throws, then had a chance to extend the game after Wernert made just 1 of 2 at the foul line with 12 seconds remaining.

The Eagles even got a clean 3-point look for Morgan Cross on the other end, but her shot bounced off the rim. Trinity Johnson secured the offensive rebound but with time running out, her desperation pass to the perimeter sailed out of bounds.

It was a disappointing end to a wild, back-and-forth game in which Midway fell behind by 10 points in the second quarter, rallied to take a 32-28 lead at the half then saw their lead stretch all the way to 44-35 halfway through the third quarter before being outscored 14-6 the rest of the period.

Cross led the team with 14 points off the bench while Jacie Chesser had a 13-point, 11-rebound double-double. Christian also had 13 points with Taylor adding 11.

Defensivley, Alexys Moore had a team-best four steals. The Eagles were plus-12 (23-11) in the turnover battle as they dropped to 21-8 on the season.

The loss puts a damper on Midway's playoffs hopes. While the Eagles are 58th in the country in RPI ranking, they have just one Quad 1 win on the season.

Their fate will be revealed when the NAIA holds its selection show on March 5.
