Baseball takes early lead but falls late to No. 6 Reinhardt

WALESKA, Ga. - Midway couldn't convert its scoring opportunities after opening up an early lead and No. 6, nationally ranked Reinhardt made the Eagles pay, completing a weekend sweep with a 5-3 win on Sunday.

Midway put the leadoff runner on in seven of its nine at-bats and came through with runs in the third and fourth innings. The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on an RBI single by Grant Hotchkiss.

After Reinhardt answered with a run in the bottom of the third, Midway immediately responded with a two-run Barrett McGill home run in the top of the fourth.

After surrendering a leadoff double, pitcher Dylan Burton came one out from escaping a bottom-of-the-fifth jam.

But with runners on second and third, Adrian Vargas hit a slow ground ball to short. Baserunner Robert Phelps slow-played a trot to third, delaying Eagle shortstop Ayden Sciandra's throw to first, which Vargas beat out as a run scored.

Two batters later, Phelps scored the tying run on a passed ball.

The visiting Eagles had golden opportunities to take the lead back, putting a runner on third with less than two outs in each of their next two at-bats, but were unable to score either time.

The hometown Eagles then made them pay in the bottom of the seventh. Leadoff batter Cade Chalmee reached third then scored the go-ahead run on a Vargas sacrifice fly. Phelps then scored what proved to be the final run on a wild pitch two batters later.

McGill and Shane Taylor both had two hits for Midway, which left eight runners on base to close a brutal, season-opening road stretch with a record of 1-5, with four of those losses coming to teams ranked in the top-six of the NAIA national poll.

Weather permitting, the Eagles' next 13 games are scheduled to be played at home, starting with a pair of doubleheaders against Concordia (Mich.) next Saturday and Sunday. First pitch for game one on each day is scheduled for noon.
