WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - Midway men's and women's tennis teams had a last tune-up before the start of River States Conference play with neutral-site matches against St. Thomas (Fla.) at the University of the Cumberlands on Tuesday.
The Eagle men took part in a pair of three-set thrillers before ultimately losing 5-0, while the women got a pair of singles wins in a 5-2 loss.
WOMEN'S MATCH: ST. THOMAS 5, MIDWAY 2
After getting swept in doubles competition, the Eagles got straight-set singles wins by
Agustina Olivero at No. 1 and
Sofia Rueda at No. 5.
Olivero defeated Lauren Seemann 6-4, 6-3 while Rueda topped Sofia Nardone 6-3, 6-2 for her third win in a row.
MEN'S MATCH: ST. THOMAS 5, MIDWAY 0
Axel Sperling and
Izan Casado went three sets at No. 1 and 2 singles, but both ended up falling. Sperling lost 6-4, 4-6, 10-7 to William Rosencratz and Casado lost 7-6, 4-6, 13-11 to Fabrizio Moreno.
The Eagles were headed for a win at No. 5 singles, as
Aleksey Granitsa topped Giacomo Nava 6-3 in the first set and was ahead 3-0 in the third before the match was called.
The men and women, who were both picked to finish second in their respective River States preseason polls, begin the RSC slate at Indiana Southeast at 1 p.m. Saturday.
