Baseball strands 11 runners in series-opening loss to Rio

MIDWAY, Ky. - Midway squandered multiple scoring opportunities, leaving 11 runners on base in a 5-1 loss to River States Conference foe Rio Grande (Ohio) in the first game of a three-game series Friday.

Despite having just two hits, the Eagles put a runner on base in all but two innings, thanks to nine walks, a hit batter and three errors by the Red Storm.

But outside of a Cole Ginter sacrifice fly in the second inning, the Eagles were not able to bring anyone home. Eight of the stranded runners were left in scoring position while the Eagles also left the bases loaded in the fifth and eighth.

Rio Grande got its first three runs with two outs, then expanded its lead to the final 5-1 score on a two-run Likeiry Jimenez home run in the eighth.

Barrett McGill reached based in all four of his plate attempts with three walks and a double, while starting pitcher Blake Kincaid had nine strikeouts in six innings of work.

Midway drops to 11-14 on the season and 5-5 in conference play. The two teams will square off in a doubleheader Saturday, beginning at noon in Midway.
