MIDWAY, Ky. - Midway men's tennis earned a dominant win for the second day in a row, taking down NCAA Division-II Kentucky Wesleyan 6-1 in a non-conference match Thursday.
After
not dropping a set the previous day against Shawnee State, Midway came out strong again in doubles, where the No. 1 team of
Ferran Clapes and
German Collado won 6-4, while the Nos. 2 (
Axel Sperling and
Izan Casado) and 3 (
Aleksey Granitsa and
Tyler Fox) both won 6-3.
Collado became the first singles player to win with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Nick Stoever at No. 3.
Following a tight loss at No. 2, where Clapes fell 4-6, 6-3, 12-10 to Jose Ferrandis, Granitsa got Midway back on track by defeating Marc Stoever 6-1, 7-6 at No. 4, leaving the Eagles just one win from clinching.
That decisive point would come from Sperling at No. 1, who gutted out a 7-5, 6-4 win against Adryan Taylor.
After getting a late start,
Manuel Mirabal and Fox had a much easier go at the fifth and sixth spots, with each player only dropping three games.
Mirabel beat Caleb Stoval 6-1, 6-2 and Fox defeated Connor Adams 6-3, 6-0.
The Eagles are now 4-4 overall and will look to improve to 2-0 in the River States Conference on Friday, when they travel to face Indiana Southeast at 5:30 p.m.
