COLUMBIA, Ky. - The Midway softball team split a doubleheader against Lindsey Wilson on Thursday at Sparks Park, claiming a 2-0 victory in game one before falling 7-1 in the nightcap.
GAME ONE: MIDWAY 2, LINDSEY WILSON 0
A dominant pitching performance and timely hits powered Midway to a shutout win in the opener. Sydney Roe (1-0) dazzled in her season debut, tossing four no-hit innings with two strikeouts before handing the ball over to Sierra Bittner, who secured the save with three scoreless innings.
Midway plated its first run in the opening inning when Kennadi Thompson reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Ryann Berger to score. The Eagles tacked on an insurance run in the fifth as Madison Hill executed a perfect bunt single to drive in Lana Maupin.
Berger and Maupin paced the offense with two hits each, while Midway's defense turned two key double plays to help secure the victory. With the final play coming from a very impressive throw from none other than Berger, as she gunned down McKenna Ingram at home plate after a center field single hit by Nora Epley.
GAME TWO: LINDSEY WILSON 7, MIDWAY 1
The Blue Raiders set the tone in the first inning as Sam Hartman blasted a two-run homer to left field. Hartman continued her strong outing with an RBI single in the third and a groundout in the sixth that plated another run.
Midway struggled to get its offense going against Lindsey Wilson's pitching duo of Kayden Murray and K'Asia Palmer, who combined for 11 strikeouts while allowing just one run. The Eagles avoided the shutout in the seventh inning when Payton Baum singled home Tenley Gilbert.
On the mound, Anna Duncan (0-1) took the loss in her first start of the season, allowing five runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings. Breanna Beach pitched the final 2.1 innings, giving up two runs on two hits.
Midway will look to bounce back in its next matchup as it prepares to take on Brescia (Ky.) in a River States Conference doubleheader, beginning on Saturday at 1 p.m.
