PULASKI, Tenn. - After a pair of tight losses, the Midway men's tennis team got its first win of the spring Thursday, handling Blue Mountain (Miss.) 5-1 in a neutral-site matchup.
Midway got the doubles point thanks to a 6-4 win by
Ferran Clapes and
German Collado at No. 1 and a 6-0 rout by Tyler Golfine and
Manuel Mirabel at No. 3.
The Eagles then earned three of their four singles victories in straight-sets, starting with Collado's 6-0, 6-3 win over Jackson Ward at No. 4. Collado is off to an excellent start this spring, opening up a 6-0 record.
Clapes soon followed with a 6-4, 7-6 victory against Santiago Perdoma at No. 3, while
Aleksey Granitsa took down Joel Renfroe 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6.
At the No. 1 position,
Axel Sperling outlasted Elio Garnier 10-6 in the third set. Sperling won the opener 6-1 before falling 7-5 in the set two.
Daniel Pinzon was also on his way to a straight-set win at No. 5 singles. He beat Luke Sanders 6-3 in the first set and was up 3-0 in the second before the match was suspended.
The Eagles' next match will be against St. Thomas (Fla.) in Williamsburg, Ky. on Tuesday. They will then travel to Indiana Southeast for the opening match of River States Conference play on Friday, March 14.
