Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Men's tennis swept in singles after winning doubles point vs. Asbury

MIDWAY, Ky. - Midway captured the doubles point but struggled to build on that momentum in singles play, losing all six matches in a 6-1, non-conference men's tennis final against Asbury in Midway Tuesday afternoon.

German Collado and Ferran Clapes started things off by defeating Franco Patino and Ignacio Ardiles at the No. 1 position.

After the visiting Eagles got a win at No. 2, the home team secured the point at No. 3, as Aleksey Granitsa and Tyler Fox jumped out to a 4-0 lead then held off a late rally by Alejandro Caceres and Gregorio Bustingorri to win 6-4.

However, Asbury was in control throughout singles play, winning four of six matches by straight sets. Collado and Manuel Mirabal forced three sets at the Nos. 3 and 6 positions but ultimately fell in the third.

Collado rebounded from a 6-1 opening-set loss with a 6-2 victory in the second before losing a 10-4 tie-breaker to Ben Moore.

Mirabal won the first set 6-3 then jumped out to an early lead in the second before Alejo Britos came back to win set two 6-4. Mirabal then held an 8-5 lead in the tie-break before Britos again rallied, this time by winning the last five points.

The Eagles, who are now 5-5 on the year, had two River States Conference home matches scheduled against Brescia and Oakland City this weekend, but both have been postponed due to weather concerns. Brescia will return to Midway on April 10 with the Oakland City match rescheduled for April 16.

Midway will now be off a week before facing Milligan (Tenn.) in a non-conference match on April 8.
