LEXINGTON, Ky. - Midway found itself in an unexpected tight battle with Brescia, but found its footing in singles competition to earn a 4-2 win in a River States Conference men's tennis matchup Thursday.
The match was played at Lexington's Genesis Health Club as Midway's home courts were still affected by a string of storms from last weekend.
The Bearcats held the momentum early, winning the doubles point by virtue of 6-2 wins at both the No. 1 and 2 doubles spots.
Midway pulled ahead following straight-set wins by
Ferran Clapes and
Izan Casado. Clapes beat Diego Laguna 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3 with Casado winning 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 against Matthew Parsons.
Brescia pulled even with a three-set win at No. 1 singles, but the Eagles eventually won the clinching point thanks to victories by
German Collado and
Aleksey Granitsa.
Collado defeated Kostiantyn Zviahintsev 7-5, 6-3 at No. 4 before Granitsa ended the match with a 6-2, 6-2 win against Jose Marino at No. 6.
Daniel Pinzon and
Manuel Mirabal were victorious at No. 3 doubles as well, beating Sebastian Munoz and Jay Felix 6-4. Pinzon's No. 5 singles match against Felix went unfinished.
The Eagles improve to 6-5 overall and are 3-0 in RSC play for the first time in program history. They'll look to extend that win streak on Friday with a 2 p.m. road matchup against Indiana East.
