GEORGETOWN, Ky. - Midway won the doubles point and captured a pair of singles wins, but Georgetown rallied for a series of straight-sets singles victories to clip the Eagles 4-3 in a non-conference men's tennis meeting Tuesday.
Midway earned the first point thanks to wins in the Nos. 1 and 2 doubles positions.
Ferran Clapes and
German Collado defeated Will Barnes and Leo Schirmer 6-4, while
Axel Sperling and
Izan Casado defeated Matthew Smith and Chase Hechemy 7-5.
After a loss at No. 1 singles, the Eagles re-took the lead thanks to
Ferran Clapes' 6-3, 6-3 win over Schirmer at No. 2 singles. But the Tigers would respond with three-consecutive wins, clinching the point when Stephen Taylor beat
Aleksey Granitsa 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5.
Midway was able to secure another straight-set win of its own before the night ended, as
Daniel Pinzon took down Rex Rool 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 6 position.
The Eagles now turn their attention to the biggest match of the season on Wednesday, with a visit from NAIA No. 19-ranked Oakland City. The winner will secure the No. 1 seed at next week's River States Conference Tournament.
Midway will come into the match 4-0 in RSC play. The Mighty Oaks entered a Tuesday meeting against Indiana Southeast 3-0. Results for the match have not been posted as of this writing.
Play is scheduled to begin at 2:45 p.m. The team will hold a senior day celebration prior to the match.
