GEORGETOWN, Ky. - The Midway women's tennis team will go into its biggest match of the season having won seven in a row, as the Eagles gutted out a 4-3, non-conference win over Georgetown on the road Tuesday night.
The most exciting match of the night also happened to be the one that clinched the victory for the Eagles.
With her team holding a 3-1 lead,
Tanit Cevada overcame a 6-2 loss in the opening set at No. 4 singles, beating Lydia Page 7-5 in the second set before winning a 10-5 tie-breaker that ensured the Eagles would leave Georgetown with a 10-2 record.
Cevada also helped clinch the doubles point, teaming with
Sofia Rueda to defeat Hana Dixon and Anna White 6-2 at No. 3. Midway also got a 6-3 win at No. 1 from
Agustina Olivero and
Mara Guillen.
Olivero and
Nana Hishida then earned straight-set wins at No. 1 and 3 singles respectively. Olivero defeated Molly Archer 6-2, 6-0 with Hishida beating Lindsey Rikkernik 6-3, 7-6.
Midway will have a quick turnaround before hosting two-time defending River States Conference champion Oakland City (Ind.) at noon tomorrow, where the winner will earn the No. 1 seed at the RSC Conference Tournament.
The Eagles will enter at 5-0 in conference play, while the Mighty Oaks were 4-0 going into a Tuesday matchup against Indiana Southeast. A final score for that match had not been reported at the time this story was published.
Prior to the match, Midway will host a senior day celebration.
