MIDWAY, Ky. - Oakland City (Ind.) continued to be the one road block in Midway's quest to capture a River States Conference women's tennis championship.
The Mighty Oaks secured the regular season title and the No. 1 seed at next week's RSC Tournament, defeating the Eagles 6-1 in a battle of conference unbeatens Wednesday.
Prior to the match, Midway held a senior day ceremony for soon-to-be departing players
Agustina Olivero,
Mara Guillen and
Angelia Herrera.
The afternoon started out encouragingly, with Olivero and Guillen winning 6-1 over Cristian Hurtado and Maria Trembach at No. 1 doubles. But OCU would rally to take the doubles point with a 6-3 victory at No. 3 then a 6-4 win at No. 2.
The Mighty Oaks (14-5, 6-0) then won five of the six singles matches in straight-sets as well, clinching the point at No. 1, where Trembach earned a pair of 7-5 wins over Olivero. Olivero held a 6-5 lead in set two before Trembach rallied, breaking her serve twice in the process.
The lone singles win came from Guillen at No. 2. Against Tiana Sparks, she won the opening set 6-3, jumped out to a 5-1 advantage in set two, then squeaked out a 7-5 win after Sparks had come back to even the set at 5-5.
Including the postseason, the Mighty Oaks have won 21 consecutive matches against River States teams since the start of 2023. In that same time, the Eagles are 0-5 against the OCU and 15-0 against the rest of the conference.
The loss ends a seven-match win streak for Midway, which is 10-3 overall and will be the No. 2 seed at the River States Tournament, finishing 5-1.
Before next week's tourney in Evansville, Ind., Midway is scheduled to host NAIA No. 19-ranked Cumberlands at 11 a.m. Saturday.
