MIDWAY, Ky. - Midway rallied from an early 3-0 deficit and held its position in the River States Conference Tournament field with a 6-5 win over Indiana Columbus in the opening game of a three-game series on Thursday.
After putting up a 6-for-8 statline in two games against the Crimson Pride a season ago,
Britten Robinson made life difficult for IUC again Thursday. With Midway down 4-1 in the sixth, Robinson delivered a two-run, two-out single, then eventually came home to score the tying run on a walk.
He then gave the Eagles their first lead of the day in the seventh, legging out a bases-loaded fielder's choice to put Midway ahead 5-4. The advantage would stretch to 6-4 following an IUC error.
That insurance run would prove beneficial. The Crimson Pride put runners on the corners in the ninth and got within a run on a
Jackson Lee wild pitch.
But Lee, who allowed just that lone run over four innings of relief, ended the game with the tying run at second when he struck out John Codner.
With Midway trailing 3-0 in the fifth, comeback efforts were sparked by a two-out, solo home run by
Grant Stone. Stone also had a double and made a great play in left field in the seventh inning, racing all the way to to wall to rob Jack VonDielingen of what would have been an RBI extra-base hit.
Now 17-22 overall, the Eagles snapped a six-game losing streak in RSC games and improved to 8-11 in conference play, continuing to hold the final spot in the six-team River States Tournament.
Midway maintained a one-game lead over West Virginia Tech (7-12) while gaining on No. 5 Brescia (9-10) after the Golden Bears defeated the Bearcats 7-6 in the opening game of a three-game set in Owensboro.
Rio Grande also improved to 7-12 in league play with a 14-12 win over Indiana Kokomo Thursday. Midway owns the tie-breaker over both the Golden Bears and Red Storm
The Eagles and Crimson Pride will play a doubleheader in Midway with game one starting at noon tomorrow. Following the completion of the second game, the Eagles will honor 20 departing players in a senior day ceremony.
