MIDWAY, Ky. - Down three players and just moments from escaping with a draw, the Midway men's soccer team was dealt a major blow as Cleary (Mich.) scored with just seven seconds remaining, stealing a 2-1 win in the Eagles' home opener Thursday.
Midway had just two shots on goal all afternoon, but made the most of one of them in the 53rd minute. From deep into his own end of the field,
Juan Caballero got great air into a pass and found
Saleh Ekuchi, who got a step on his defender and was able to sneak a goal past Cougars keeper Austin Freemire.
The Eagle defense held the lead for more than 30 minutes, a stretch highlighted by keeper
Connor Vincent denying Cleary's Jack Heald on a 64th-minute penalty kick.
But the Cougars were able to pull even on an Atario Brown goal with just 6:34 to play, and that wouldn't be the last impact play Brown made.
Contentious from the start, the match featured nine yellow cards and four ejections, with Midway accounting for three of them. This left the Eagles short-handed down the stretch and it proved costly in the closing moments.
Working quickly in desperation mode, Freemire sent a long free kick to Brown, who found a cutting Luca Taylor, who found enough space to fire a shot past the outstretched arm of Vincent with just seven seconds remaining.
Now 1-1-1, the Eagles will attempt to regroup before a Sept. 14 road matchup at Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.).Â
