MIDWAY, Ky. - Its back against the wall on several occasions, the Midway women's volleyball team battled back time and again and earned its first win of the 2025 season 13-25, 25-21, 21-25, 25-21,15-13 over Georgetown in the Eagles' home opener Thursday.
Down a set going into the fourth, the Eagles led by as many as seven and withstood a late Tiger rally, ending things on a
Zoie Hays kill off a
Lindsey Whitehouse assist.
Set five started great as Midway scored the first three points, before the Tigers scored the next four. From that point on, the teams would tie eight times before the Eagles rallied again to secure the victory.
Down 13-12,
Nyla Gaines tied the set on a kill off a Whitehouse assist.
On the ensuing point, Midway made perhaps the play of the match. What looked like an easy Georgetown kill was stopped by a diving dig from
Aubry Kamholz, who got the ball to Whitehouse, who found
Ava Benner, who slammed home the last of her team-best 11 kills.
Kamholz finished with seven digs, tying
Blair Riney for the most on the team, while Benner added six.
After a Tiger timeout, Hays and Whitehouse made the clinching point again, rising for a match-sealing block on a Reagan Kupper attack.
The final play capped a career night for Whitehouse, whose 37 assists were the most recorded by an Eagle player since Valarie Ramso had 45 against Saint Mary of the Woods
on Nov. 2, 2023.
Midway also finished the night with 14 service aces, a total it has topped
just once since the 2021 season. Aaliya Lawler finished with a match-high four aces for Midway, which improved to 1-5 on the season.Â
The Eagles return to action next Tuesday, traveling to face in-state opponent Campbellsville at 7 p.m.
