LEBANON, Tenn. - Midway secured a pair of weight class wins, but the depth of ninth-ranked Cumberland (Tenn.) proved too strong as the Phoenix defeated the Eagles 39-9 in a Mid-South men's wrestling dual Wednesday night.
Coming away victorious for Midway was
Alex Velazquez at 133 pounds and
Anthony Popi in the heavyweight division.
Velazquez earned a dominant, 17-2 tech fall over Kaleb Ruhl while Popi also won with ease in a 9-1 major decision against Ethan Dixon.
The Phoenix, who had four nationally ranked wrestlers compete on Wednesday, earned six of their eight wins via pinfall, tech fall or forfeit.
The Eagles' best showing against a ranked opponent came at 165, where
Aidan Karpinski went wire-to-wire with 20th-ranked Ethan Gomez, before Gomez eventually eked out a 5-3 victory.
Now 2-7 overall and 0-4 in the MSC, the Eagles travel to St. Louis for the Missouri Baptist Duals, which begin at noon on Saturday.
