Midway Women's Basketball Opens 2026-27 Season at Brescia Classic

MIDWAY, Ky. — The Midway University women's basketball team will open its 2026-27 season this weekend with a pair of games at the Brescia Classic in Owensboro, Kentucky.

The Eagles will begin their season on Friday, Oct. 23, against Montreat College at 6 p.m. before returning to the court on Saturday, Oct. 24, to face Mission University at 2 p.m. Both contests will take place at the Moore Center Gymnasium on the campus of Brescia University.

Midway enters the new season under fourth-year head coach Kylee Gorby, who has guided the Eagles to a 50-38 record over her first three seasons.

The Eagles are coming off a successful 2025-26 campaign in which they finished 21-8 overall and 12-4 in River States Conference play. Midway averaged 84.3 points per game while holding opponents to 67.2 points per contest.

The Eagles also averaged 15.8 steals per game last season, forcing an average of 25 turnovers per contest.

Midway returns a large portion of last season's roster, including several All-River States Conference selections.

Junior guard A'Lyrica Hughes returns after earning First Team All-RSC honors for the second consecutive season. Hughes averaged a team-high 11.9 points per game last season while recording 144 rebounds, 85 steals and 70 assists.

Fellow junior Morgan Cross also returns following a Second Team All-RSC selection. Cross averaged 8.9 points and 4.0 rebounds per game while shooting 55.2 percent from the field.

Sophomore Alexys Moore is back after earning Third Team All-RSC honors during her freshman campaign. Moore averaged 11.8 points per game and connected on 40 three-pointers last season.

Senior guard Jermyra Christian will also play a key role for Midway after averaging 9.8 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game last season. Christian enters the season just 38 points shy of reaching 1,000 career points.

The Eagles were picked to finish second in the River States Conference preseason coaches' poll, receiving 75 points and three first-place votes. Rio Grande earned the top spot with 78 points and seven first-place votes.

Scouting Montreat

Friday's matchup will mark the first meeting between Midway and Montreat in women's basketball.

The Cavaliers enter the 2026-27 season under head coach Jamie Moore, who holds a 28-29 record at Montreat.

Both teams will be looking to begin their seasons with a victory in the opening game of the Brescia Classic.

Scouting Mission

Midway will conclude its opening weekend on Saturday against Mission University.

The matchup will provide another early-season opportunity for the Eagles to evaluate their returning roster and build momentum before continuing their nonconference schedule.

Looking Ahead

Following the Brescia Classic, Midway will travel to Northern Kentucky University for an exhibition contest on Thursday, Oct. 29, at 6 p.m.

The Eagles will then return to regular-season action on Saturday, Oct. 31, traveling to Indiana University South Bend for a 1 p.m. matchup.
