MIDWAY, Ky. — The Midway University men's soccer team will face one of its toughest challenges of the season on Saturday, Oct. 24, when the Eagles welcome No. 9 Rio Grande to Midway Turf Field for a pivotal River States Conference matchup.
Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. as Midway looks to strengthen its postseason positioning against the conference-leading RedStorm.
The Eagles enter Saturday's contest with a 7-4-3 overall record and a 1-3-1 mark in RSC play, while Rio Grande comes into the matchup at 10-1-1 overall and a perfect 5-0 in conference competition.
Rio Grande currently sits atop the RSC standings with 15 points, while Midway occupies sixth place with four points.
With just two regular-season matches remaining, Saturday's contest presents an important opportunity for the Eagles to earn valuable conference points against a nationally ranked opponent.
Last Time Out
Midway enters Saturday's matchup following a 2-2 draw against Brescia University on Thursday, Oct. 22, at Midway Turf Field.
The Eagles struck early when sophomore Rhys Dickson scored his second goal of the season just 4:26 into the contest off assists from Nahuel Cruz Arjona and Martiniano Sansone.
Brescia responded just over a minute later, but Midway regained the lead in the 19th minute when Sansone scored his third goal of the season off an assist from Saleh Ekuchi.
The Eagles carried their 2-1 advantage into halftime and maintained the lead for much of the second half.
However, Brescia found the equalizer in the 80th minute when Javi Fernandez Albandrea scored his 10th goal of the season, forcing the teams to settle for a draw.
Midway held a narrow 14-13 advantage in total shots, while Brescia finished with a 4-3 edge in shots on goal.
Sansone led the Eagles with four shots, one goal and one assist, while Dickson added a goal and Cruz Arjona and Ekuchi each recorded an assist.
Eagles Offensive Leaders
Under second-year head coach Stu Riddle, Midway has established itself as one of the more productive offensive teams in the River States Conference.
The Eagles have scored 37 goals through 14 matches, averaging 2.64 goals per contest while recording 30 assists.
Senior forward George Spencer continues to lead the Midway attack with 12 goals and one assist for 25 points.
The Yeovil, England, native has recorded a team-high 49 shots, including 28 on goal, and remains one of the conference's top offensive threats.
Senior midfielder Saleh Ekuchi has also played a significant role in Midway's offensive production, recording five goals and a team-high seven assists for 17 points.
Junior forward Elijah Orren has contributed five goals and two assists, while senior Miles Ezell has added four goals and five assists.
Sophomore Rhys Dickson has recorded two goals and six assists, including a goal in Thursday's draw against Brescia.
Midway has registered 218 shots this season, including 114 on goal, while holding a 37-23 advantage in goals scored over its opponents.
Scouting Rio Grande
Rio Grande enters Saturday's matchup as the No. 9-ranked team in the NAIA and the leader in the River States Conference standings.
The RedStorm have compiled a 10-1-1 overall record and remain unbeaten in conference play with five victories in five matches.
Under longtime head coach Scott Morrissey, Rio Grande has established itself as one of the premier men's soccer programs in the NAIA.
Morrissey has guided the RedStorm to two NAIA National Championships, winning titles in 2003 and 2015, while building a program with a long history of postseason success.
Rio Grande enters Saturday's contest riding a six-match winning streak, including a 3-2 road victory over the University of the Cumberlands on Tuesday, Oct. 20.
The RedStorm built a 3-0 advantage against the Patriots before holding off a late comeback to secure the victory.
Rio Grande previously earned a 3-0 conference victory over IU Columbus on Oct. 15, with sophomore Facundo Rossich scoring twice in the opening half.
Rossich has emerged as an offensive threat for the RedStorm, while Tommy Munoz Salazar has also demonstrated his scoring ability this season, including a three-goal performance against Kentucky Christian in Rio Grande's conference opener.
Defensively, sophomore goalkeeper Samy Hamou has contributed to the RedStorm's success, including a shutout performance against IU Columbus.
Conference Implications
Saturday's matchup carries significant implications for both programs as the River States Conference regular season approaches its conclusion.
Rio Grande enters the weekend looking to maintain its position atop the conference standings, while Midway is attempting to secure valuable points in the race for postseason qualification.
The Eagles currently sit sixth with four points, ahead of IU Columbus and Kentucky Christian in the standings.
A positive result against the nationally ranked RedStorm would provide Midway with momentum heading into its regular-season finale.
Looking Ahead
Following Saturday's matchup, Midway will conclude the 2026 regular season on Thursday, Oct. 29, when the Eagles host West Virginia Tech at Midway Turf Field.
Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m., with the contest also serving as Senior Day for the Eagles.
Midway will honor its graduating student-athletes as the program closes out the regular season and looks toward postseason competition.
