MIDWAY, Ky. — The Midway men's soccer team rewrote the program record book Saturday afternoon, defeating Boyce College 6-2 at Midway Turf Field for its sixth consecutive victory.
The victory improved the Eagles to 6-1-2 overall and extended their unbeaten streak to seven consecutive matches. Midway has not lost since falling to Saint Francis (Ind.) on Sept. 7.
With the victory, Midway set a new program record with six consecutive wins, surpassing the previous mark of five set by the 2017 team.
The Eagles also extended their unbeaten streak to seven matches, breaking another record previously held by the 2017 team. That team went unbeaten in six consecutive matches to close the season, with the final match ending in a 1-1 draw in the River States Conference Championship, where they fell to WV tech in penalties. The streak ended with a 2-0 loss to Union (Ky.) in the opening match of the following season.
Midway's current unbeaten streak began with a 1-1 draw against Cleary on Sept. 11. Since then, the Eagles have rattled off six consecutive victories over Transylvania, Bryan, Governors State, Cincinnati-Clermont, Kentucky Christian and Boyce.
George Spencer also added his name to the Midway record book with another historic performance.
Boyce struck first Saturday when Jude Hammen converted a penalty kick in the 31st minute to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 advantage.
The lead lasted less than seven minutes.
Spencer found the equalizer in the 38th minute off an assist from Elijah Orren. Less than five minutes later, Spencer struck again, this time off an assist from Saleh Ekuchi, to give the Eagles a 2-1 advantage heading into halftime.
Spencer wasted little time completing the hat trick after the break. Miles Ezell found Spencer in the 48th minute, and the senior finished the opportunity to give Midway a 3-1 advantage.
The hat trick was Spencer's second of the season after he also scored three goals in Midway's 10-0 victory over Cincinnati-Clermont on Sept. 25.
With his two performances, Spencer has now recorded the 12th and 13th hat tricks in program history and is the eighth different player in Midway history to record a hat trick.
Boyce responded in the 52nd minute when Kayden Kalenga scored to cut the Midway advantage to 3-2, but the Eagles quickly answered.
Just over three minutes later, Nahuel Cruz found the back of the net off an assist from Rhys Dickson to restore Midway's two-goal advantage at 4-2.
Orren then put the finishing touches on the historic victory with a pair of goals.
His first came in the 73rd minute off an assist from David Castilleios to push the lead to 5-2. Orren struck again in the 85th minute, with goalkeeper Connor Vincent recording the assist, to give the Eagles their final 6-2 advantage.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Spencer led the Midway attack with three goals on six shots, putting five of those attempts on frame. Orren added two goals and an assist, while Cruz scored his second goal of the season.
Midway finished with an 18-8 advantage in shots and put 14 attempts on goal compared to five for Boyce. The Eagles also held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Vincent played all 90 minutes in goal, recording three saves to earn the victory.
The Eagles have now outscored their opponents 25-6 during their seven-match unbeaten streak, including a 24-5 advantage during their program-record six-game winning streak.
Midway will return to River States Conference play on Thursday, Oct. 8, when the Eagles welcome Indiana University East to Midway Turf Field.
